US General John Nicholson, commander of the US and NATO mission in Afghanistan, recently told reporters that the “Taliban cannot win” under a new US strategy in the area. However, it is not the first time that US officials have made similar claims.
His claim, and statement, on Afghanistan was not only debunked, but also criticised on the social media. Below are some of the tweets citing his statement:
This idiotic statement is what you get when generals are in charge of “peace” process: They think it means bullying the enemy into surrender https://t.co/4Z2fIclWce

There has always been a problem of commanders spinning in a positive fashion. That is why we cannot have the military serving as the Director of National Intelligence Representatives abroad. There is too much an incentive to grade your own paper.

Gen Nicholson continues to target Pak for his own forces utter failure in Afghanistan! Time for US to admit its own failure & seek coop from neighbouring states without bullying tactics. Will we give this msg to Mattis when he comes here? https://t.co/fZScsQd9Jb
